Recently I saw a video in FB saying there will be a TED in every class. Hearing that I remembered a TED in my class who is little different. So just want to share my experience with you all.
Last Academic year ( 2014-15) I was teaching 6th English in one of AP centres. First time online teaching was a different experience. There was a boy in my class whom I would name him as TED, he is very active in class, Regular to school, always with a smiling face but when I ask some questions from studies he goes silent and will sit with a serious face. He could not read a word in English. I used to become upset, thinking he is active in class, regular, enjoys everything but when it comes to studies he goes silent. The Academic year ended where I couldn’t show much impact on him. I took same set of students in my next academic year (2015-16).
Year started, I showed more concentration on TED,I started enjoying his mistakes and I used to pull his legs also , all my examples would be with his name ( TED is a good boy, he is studying well) then will ask him to find noun, pronoun, adjective from the sentences. When I give such kind of examples he used to have a glow in his face. Slowly he showed some interest and improvement in studies. Right or wrong he will answer to my question.
Generally I have a habit of keeping a bet/challenge with my kids on how much they can score in this assessment. So TED said he will get 10 on 15, which was fine for me. Suddenly TED disappeared 6-7 classes before the assessment. I was worried; Class Assistant said he won’t come for next few days. I couldn’t do anything but just asked Class Assistant to check if he can come for assessments.
The day came, Term 3 assessment started, to my shock I saw MY TED in class I was overjoyed. Though he missed revision classes he sounded confident that he can do it well and win in the challenge. Assessments got over, correction got over and scores was uploaded in Portal. I was just speechless seeing TED’s score. He scored 15/15. Though I couldn’t believe at first seeing his paper my eyes were filled with tears.
I just couldn’t hug him but I made all boys to hug him and girls to applaud him TED made my day
I don’t feel Proud to be his teacher but I feel proud that he is my student. Every small things that we teachers do will impact on kids. Either positive or negative impact it is in our hands. Wish we all can identify other TED’s in our class and bring them out of the shell that they live in.
ALL THE BEST
